6 Day Photo Workshop

MARCH 27 - APRIL 1, 2024

Video by workshop attendee Eric Arendt.

$6,900 USD

Celebrate Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Seville, Spain as it has been since the 16th century. During Semana Santa, Seville becomes a living performance of mourning and grief. The 116 pasos (processions) are acts of public penance for the marchers and a sign of devotion for Sevillanos. Processions of 50,000 cofradía members (or brotherhoods) of the Catholic Church wear traditional robes and solemnly traverse the city from Palm Sunday to Easter morning. Penitents march through the streets, followed by elaborate 4,000 lb. floats on which sit 16th-century images of the Virgin Mary or Christ.

A capella saetas (sad songs) accompany some processions, brass bands others, while some remain silent. Some pasos occur during the day while others are candlelit and border on spooky at night. Smell the sweet smell of azahares (orange blossoms) muddled with incense and loads of candle wax permeates the city.

“David is a rare combination of excellent teacher and talented photographer. This is the second "experience" that I’ve been on with David. The first was to Mexico City (highly recommended) and recently to Semana Santa in Seville, Spain. David gives clear, simple instructions, and is generous with his extensive knowledge of photography. He’s kind and patient with novices and is able to inspire more-experienced photographers. He has a unique take on creating story-telling images that would help anyone take photos that stand out from the standard, tourist snapshot."- Elaine Arnt, Orinda, CA

“I just completed a great trip to Seville to photograph the 2023 Semana Santa. David's trip was very well organized. He is great teacher and was very responsive to queries and needs of the participants. He actively solicits comments and critiques. I would not hesitate to travel with David again. Well done!"- Bob Newman, Gainesville, FL

"I totally enjoy David’s workshops. He takes the time to research and plan out the activities to provide good photo opportunities. David also builds cultural activities, including food, into the workshop so it’s not all about just taking pictures so that you get more authentic experience.  David is very knowledgeable about photograph and has a passion to share that knowledge with workshop participants.  He is available before, during and after the workshop to answer question and provides information on travel logistics that help to make getting to the workshop location less stressful." - Wanda Helms, Albuquerque, NM
